- #10. DALE EARNHEARDT JR JR - IT’S A CORPORATE WORLD
we almost lost detroit. fuckin’ a. love this record. totally refreshing and well produced in a time where i feel like im surrounded by hipsters with money, intentionally making “lo-fi” recordings.
- #9. FUCKED UP - DAVID COMES TO LIFE
really? your gonna scream over super melodic guitar rock? outstanding. it blew me away at first listen, and still continues to.
- #8. STEPHEN MALKMUS & THE JICKS - MIRROR TRAFFIC
well, he’s right! everyone wants a blowjob! i do! this is, in my opinion, the best malkmus album since his first solo effort. reminds me little bit of a band called pavement? :)
- #7. YUCK - YUCK
this record was such a pleasant surprise! i guess i didnt have any expectations? all i knew was a buddy told me if i loved dinosaur jr (which i do), i’d love this record. blew me away. 8 stars.
- #6. ANDREW JACKSON JIHAD - KNIFE MAN
quite possibly the most underrated release of the year. a brilliant effort from start to finish. chock full o’ wit! love that last track!
- #5. J MASCIS - SEVERAL SHADES OF WHY
the most BEAUTIFUL album of the year. hands down. mascis nails every track. a perfect record.
- #4. THE WELLINGTONS - IN TRANSIT
What can i say about Australia’s darlings of power pop? they just don’t know how to make a bad record!! Australia’s Got A Secret and its THIS record! Why aren’t you listening to it yet??? go! now!
- #3. MATES OF STATE - MOUNTAINTOPS
Mountaintops is perfect. A little more polished, but it works on this record. Every cut is ear candy, and what the fuck? its the fucking mates of state!! get after it!
- #2. BOSTON SPACESHIPS - LET IT BEARD
ok seriously, fuck St. Panda or Bon Foxes or whatever,…why haven’t i seen this record on any 2011 list yet??? are you all insane?? ok it’s not gbv, but without a doubt it is Bob Pollard’s finest release outside of the aforementioned ohio indie-rockers. Really people, please do yourself a favor and Let It Beard. (go straight to “Tabby & Lucy” if you are in a hurry)
- #1. THE ITCHY HEARTS - TRIED TO BE PUNK
for starters, it’s the greatest album title ever. this record has been my soundtrack of 2011, through good times and bad. its seemingly, effortlessly flawless. singer andy cobb may have created a timeless masterpiece. ”tried to be punk” is the new measuring stick. show me your best indie-folk, blues-punk record in 20 years and i will most likely respond with “it’s a great record, but it’s no Tried To Be Punk” i don’t know what else to say except do yourselves a big favor and listen!
NOW, before you all get your panties in a bunch, your Honorable Mentions: Wilco-“The Whole Love”, Pains Of Being Pure At Heart-“Belong”, Thurston Moore-“Demolished Thoughts”, Lifeguards-“Waving at the Astronauts”
